United Way of Central Kentucky wants your blood, at least at its sponsored blood drive.
The nonprofit is hosting a Halloween-themed blood drive event is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 27 at its headquarters, 604 N. Main St. in Elizabethtown, to support the American Red Cross.
The blood drive’s theme is “give blood, starve a vampire,” a news release from the organization said.
“Through this event, we want to unite the community to help fill the gaps in the national blood supply,” said Christa Shouse, president of United Way of Central Kentucky. “The generosity of our community can truly help save lives.”
Those who donate blood or platelets through the drive will receive a $10 e-gift card of their choice and also will be entered into a drawing for a $5,000 gift card.
Those interested in donating blood can register in advance, and walk-ins will also be welcome, the release said. An event page for the blood drive with registration information can be found by visiting unitedwayck.org.
On Sept. 11, the American Red Cross declared a national blood shortage, citing a critically low blood supply level that dropped nearly 25% since early August. 10,000 additional blood products is needed each week over the next month for the blood supply to reach sufficient levels and meet hospital and patient needs, the organization said.
In addition to blood donations, monetary donations can be made to the Red Cross by going to redcross.org.
